Permaculture Apprenticeship Program
On farm immersion with focus on permaculture education.
Certificate Course in "Tropical Subsistence Gardening using Permaculture"
All material from the 25 part class series will be covered. (see Classes page)
- The goal is for participants to become able to grow a complete diet in Hawaii using permaculture.
- all class material from growing a complete diet series will be covered, and quizzes to test comprehension will be given.
- Sustainable off-grid living techniques, and appropriate technology.
- Hands on planting, care, harvest, preparation, and eating of most of the plants covered.
- all food included, about 50 to 75% from the land, 90-95% locally grown.
- field trips to several different established and newly planted permaculture sites
- 12 hrs per week work commitment in areas related to topics being covered, experiential learning.
- Certificate upon completion of the full 6 mo. course.
- Apprentice gets to come along on consultation and design sessions with designer Wade Bauer to clients sites to see how designs are created first hand.
- long term farm/intern manager position with small stipend may be possible upon successful completion of the program.
Apprenticeship Program

The Work:
12 hrs per week. Some tasks will correspond with class materials to ensure hands on application of the skills and info being learned. Work is more centered around learning the skills than with the work trade program. Tasks will vary with the seasons and the projects needed done on the land. The bulk of recurring maintenance on the homestead involves mulching, both with chop and drop involving a wide variety of coppiced and pollarded trees, and with recycled "County mulch". Weeding, harvesting, and planting are also frequently performed. Building projects, are also sometimes in the works and may require, sanding, painting, light construction etc. Machete, sickles, shovels, digging bars, picks, and loppers are some of the common tools you will be using to , "chop and drop", dig holes for planting. Much of this work is of a physically demanding nature. Applicants should be able to work for 4 hrs at a time. There are usually multiple different tasks that need done so it is often possible to get assigned less physically demanding work on occasion as needed. Cleaning of common and personal areas, and food prep, are Not included in your work hours.
The Class Materials:
All materials for the 25 part class series "How to Grow a Complete Diet in Hawaii with Permaculture "will be provided to work exchangers. This includes 50 pages of class notes, and 25 slideshows including approximately 2500 photos. As well as recipes and plant identification guides. This material is provided through digital access, and can be viewed on a phone, tablet, or laptop. Work exchangers are not required to study this material, however, ideal applicants will find access to this educational material highly enticing and will be motivated with self study to further their knowledge on the subject. Apprentices are required to study the provided class materials and will only receive course completion certification after completing open note quizzes on all class material.
Food provided:
100% of food is provided for apprentices, 50 to 75% from the land and 90-95% local grown. For work exchange, roughly about 50 to 75% of your food will be provided from the land. This includes: a wide variety of cooking greens and culinary herbs, bananas, papayas, various fruits and vegetables, coconuts for making coconut milk, and sprouted coconuts, cassava, etc.. Many fruits and vegetables are seasonal so we eat with the seasons and we can't guarantee what will be available. Filtered drinking water will be provided.
You are responsible for the rest of your food, such as rice, beans, eggs, meat, may be required depending on your diet, the season, etc.
Shared Amenities:
Open air kitchen with fridge/freezer, sink, propane 2 burner stove, lights, blender, dishes, pots, pans, coconut opener and grater. Solar oven.
Limited solar electricity for charging phones and devices during the day only.
Hot shower.
Composting toilet that uses sawdust and lime and feeds trees on the land.
Communications: we get decent At&t cell service here, Verizon does not have service here. We do not have wifi.
Personal accommodations:
10x20 covered open air carport tent with close-able ends with 4x8 raised bed platform. 6x6 personal yoga space covered with padded flooring tiles. Two mosquito nets for bed and yoga spaces. No electricity.
Personal skills:
Skills in any of the following areas are helpful but not required: Gardening, farming, Permaculture, Nursery Management, Website Design, Marketing, Natural and conventional Building, photography, videography, video editing, cooking, etc.
